MORE than 300 people have joined a campaign to free a disgraced former mayor from prison.
Ian Stafford – twice mayor of Preesall and Knott End – was jailed for two years earlier this month after admitting breaking into women's homes and stealing underwear.

The 59-year-old rifled through drawers before carrying out disgusting sex acts with the garments.

But friends believe Stafford has been treated harshly by the courts and are calling for him to be freed.
Anita Rowe, 50, who worked as Stafford's ironing lady, launched a petition aimed at sparking an appeal against the sentence.

She says Stafford – an odd job man and gardener – needed medical help not jail.

Ms Rowe, of Sandy Lane, Preesall, added: "I know what he did was wrong, but with all the publicity I feel he's been punished enough.

"It was very harsh to give him a prison sentence in the first place. He clearly needs medical help more than a spell in jail.

"I've got around 300 signatures already. I wondered what sort of response I'd get but generally people have said they thought the sentence was a bit over the top.

"I've knocked on about 50 doors and only had two slammed in my face.

"Everybody who knows Ian knows he wouldn't harm a fly and that he needs to be given help rather than treated like a criminal."

He is being treated like a criminal because he is a criminal.

I know him and I'm sorry but the trust has gone. He knew what he was doing was wrong and should do the punishment.

Deluded - Are they seriously saying that every person who is given a degree of trust to carry out work in peoples gardens etc should be able to wander around the house rifling through cupboards and underwear draws with the only deterrent to getting caught being a nice chat with a therapist? Get real.

He is a bit sick, and I mean a bit sick. This is really more sad than anything else. Why put anyone in jail who is not a public risk? This wastes public money, and good solid sceintific research is more likely to result in more criminality, and more cost. With affected rubbish like this no wonder the country is going down the drain. The two who slammed the door are showing that nastiness that I'm afraid Blackpool and Lancashire are famous for and one of the reasons people don't want to come on holiday anymore. Like voting for the nasty party, who wants to come to the nasty town. And I'm in the middle ground politically incidentally currently tending towards the Conservatives.

He was an elected public official and as a result should have been setting an example in his conduct. The punishment could not be harsh enough for someone who has abused the trust of the people he was elected to represent. His was a shameful and disgusting act that would have been inexcusable for a 13 year old school boy never mind a 59 year old councillor.

he commited a crime and should be punished, however 2 years is a long time when you look at the scum that beat people up and only get community service, there are a lot of evil people out there that make walking the streets of Blackpool at night a very scary experience. the pervert mayor was/is not one of them. if its 2 years for him it should be a minmum of 5 years for anyone who attacks somone

Exactly, the punishment doesn't fit the crime. He received two years for EACH sentence to run concurrently, look at articles on here for more serious crimes and you'll see violent, repeat offenders getting less than that. At the time he was sentenced there was a story about a guy who beat up a 60 year old guy in a pub so severely he thought he'd killed him. That guy got 18 months and he was on license at the time of the offense after serving TEN YEARS for drug smuggling.

Are we really saying that being a bit of a freak and jacking off into ladies underwear is a more serious crime than beating someone to near death?

Look at the guy 'jailed' for four attacks on his girlfriend printed today, 16 weeks in prison plus a month on remand!!

Criminals must loven knowing that they can be violent towards others and get lighter sentences than some weird guy with a fe tish! (apparently that word is 'unsuitable')
