FIREWORK throwing yobs have left a young girl with a broken arm and a pensioner living in fear.
They are just two of the victims in a growing number of shocking cases seen ahead of Bonfire Night.

Blackpool Police have dealt with 23 firework-related incidents in the last week alone while Lancashire Fire Service has already turned out to 66 calls in connection with bonfires.

Emergency service bosses fear things will get worse ahead of tomorrow night.

Lancashire's Chief Fire Officer, Peter Holland, said: "Firework injuries continue to keep our hospital Accident and Emergency departments in Lancashire among the busiest in the country before, during and after Bonfire Night."

A 13-year-old girl was today nursing a broken arm after falling from her bike while fleeing a gang of youths setting fireworks off in Rossall.

And in the latest incident a firework blasted into the kitchen of a Fleetwood pensioner before shooting around her flat.

June Owen, 60, who had open heart surgery in May, screamed in terror as the rocket bounced around her first-floor apartment on Cherry Tree Court. The firework struck at 10pm on Sunday, filling her home with smoke and burning furnishings.

"I haven't been able to eat or sleep. It's shock really," said Mrs Owen.

"I was in bed and the next thing I knew there was a big boom and then a big flash and there was a series of flashes. I just sat up and screamed. I couldn't see, the place was absolutely full of smoke I didn't know what it was straight away.

"It was like a bomb going off, it was so loud. An ordinary firework would not have done that, it must have been one of those very powerful ones."

The incident involving the young cyclist happened at 4pm on Thursday near the Coastwatch look-out shelter at Rossall Point.

Witnesses reported seeing youngsters playing with fireworks before one escaped and flew towards the 13-year-old girl as she rode past with a friend.

She fell off her bike, breaking her arm on the sea wall as she tumbled.
Staff from the NCI rushed to help and told The Gazette it had been a "terrible" incident.

Given the state of the feral youth in this Country I think it is high time we banned the sale of fireworks to individuals....

I still advocate their enjoyment and use at large organised events such as the local championships and end of season displays by BPB but these could be sold under a licence scheme.

It's the same every year youths buy the things and cause havoc and all sorts of noise going on till very late at night. In addition some of the fireworks you can buy today are in effect complicated pyrotechnic devices which can produce a display over a few minutes.
If the black powder that goes into these devices were to be sold separately it would be illegal.

It doesn't take much intelligence to construct a pipe bomb and the materials for one are being sold on our High Streets.

Time for a total ban on public sales of any fireworks as a lot of idiots in todays society are irresponsible and don't have any basic common sense.

Sure there will be some around who see no harm in selling explosives to young people but we now live in a time where there are more stupid people than there used to be.

I totally agree. Why are these deadly weapons still available to the public. Profesionally organised displays, great. Parents going out and buying a box of standard fireworks to responsibly let off in the back garden for the kids, fine.
Unfortunately, the latter is no longer possible due to the dregs of society who buy them to amuse themselves by terrorising injuring and ruining peoples lives.

Still, judging buy the firework shops keep appearing on every street corner, people just see it as an easy buck. To hell with the consequences hey!

Fly-by-Night Firework Shops seem to crop up every year to cash in and then disappear...Do they veto the ages of customers?...I doubt it....Where would be the financial gain in that..?

When I was a kid more years ago than I care to remember, buying my fireworks and Bonfire Night was one of the high spots of the year. I am not saying that there never any incidents but on the whole we were sensible and what incidents there were, were just accidents.

Reluctantly I have to agree that the time has probably come for calling a halt on sales to members of the public. I think it would be sad though to deny enjoyment to the majority of kids who do not do these stupid things.

Why do fireworks need to be given before the actual day anyway. Its not until nov 5 anyway. They are explosives and should be treated as such. Sold only to people who hold a licence. At least the police are the ones who can give out licences and there are more powers to stop them getting to youths. Its only a matter of time before someone is killed.
