BLACKPOOL'S obesity timebomb has exploded – as figures reveal almost a third of the town's children are overweight.
Health bosses today warned the implications for a generation of fat
children could be "phenomenally bad" – and cost the taxpayer millions.

Almost 20 per cent of Year Six pupils (11 and 12 year-olds) in Blackpool
are clinically obese. Another 11.4 per cent are rated as overweight.

The picture is just as worrying for children just starting at school.

Thirteen per cent of Blackpool children aged four and five are overweight – 9.7 per cent are obese.

Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, said a two-pronged attack
was needed – both to prevent more children from becoming overweight
and to help obese children lose weight.

He said: "It's been a slow fuse burning for the last 20 to 25 years
and now the bomb has gone off.

"We are left picking up the pieces and it is a huge problem.

"The figures for Blackpool are too high.

We need to start in pre-school years, even right at conception. We
have many women getting pregnant who are overweight or obese.

"Blackpool has poor breast-feeding rates, which contributes."

Experts are calling for action to focus on prevention from an early
age, as well as helping those already overweight.

Over-eating and lack of physical activity are blamed for the generation
of heavy youngsters.

"Over-eating and lack of physical activity are blamed for the generation of heavy youngsters"....

...couldn't be caused by the lack of safe playing areas, could it? All these proposed new housing estates which will reduce the amount of availible playing space...can you see a developer leaving much prime land for playing on when housing is worth so much more....

....3,2,1 ... it'll be deleted

It's good the Gazette has put a picture of a fat person in the article or I wouldn't have known what one looked like!

When children are having to have their baby teeth pulled out because their parents are giving them coca cola in baby feeding bottles , what else do you expect? Just a nation of bone idol idiots whose only bit of exercise is trotting off to the offy , wandering round in circles in the shopping mall or pressing the remote control button.

A trip round Blackpool town centre should be enough to tell you of the state of the fat lards that wander about

Obesity was always on the cards, it all begun with thatcher shutting down the England's youth clubs, now made worse by the internet. Kids have nowhere to go, parents are frightened to let kids out of their sight because of paedophiles. Kids no longer exercise, prefering to play the ps3 or bum around on line.

If kids do go out where is there for them to go now days? hanging out in the park drinking their cider not only makes kids anti social but also makes em fat!

Bring back youth clubs and other fun safe activities for the kids and watch them get slimmer again. Well that and teach lazy parents about healthy eating!

Its not difficuly,if you eat more calories than you burn off you put weight on,so if you want to take it off,do more exercise and eat less, just because we have more food available than any time in the worlds history doesnt mean we,ve got to eat it.My health comes before Mcdonalds share price!
