TRADERS along the Fylde's revamped tram tracks today welcomed the news they were waiting for.
As revealed in later editions of yesterday's Gazette, the tracks will re-open from Squires Gate to Fleetwood on April 26 – ending almost six months of frustration for businesses and visitors.

Bosses at Blackpool Transport took the controversial decision to close part of the 11-mile tracks as part of an £11.8m upgrade in November.

Since then, many businesses in north Fylde say they have felt the pinch from having the historic trams taken off the tracks.

The trams have been running along the Promenade from Starr Gate to Uncle Tom's Cabin since Good Friday but have been unable to run any further due to continuing electrical work.

Completion this week will mean the trams will be open to the public on the whole system for the first time since November.

It is the longest time the system has been out of service in its 110-year history.

Julian Brent, manager at Fleetwood market, said: "This is great news for the town and its traders.

"We have not been as badly hit as we thought but lots of people come to Fleetwood on the trams and when they are out of action people tend to stay away."

Peter Wills, chairman of the Cleveleys Seafront Partnership, said: "With the opening of the tram system it will mean that people coming to Cleveleys can enjoy the traditional transport network while looking at the new modern Promenade which opens this weekend."

In Bispham some businesses have felt the pinch more than others.

Jordan Hart, from Hart's Amusements on Red Bank Road, said: "I would say we were down by 20 per cent on last years takings due to the trams."

And Mick Grewcock, from Bispham Traders' Association, said: "We have had a few people moaning but we realise this sort of thing has to take place. There will be a lot of relief in the town once it opens fully."

Well I think the number one service which has replaced the trams has been brilliant: fast, comfortable and more convenient.

Trams may be alright for visitors as a novelty but give me the buses every time.

Now we need the trams to go to the airport terminal not just to Squires Gate station AND to North Station then we might start to get a decent integrated system.

Unfortunately it will be a few years yet until we actually see the "new trams" which are needed to improve the commuter section of the tramway from North Pier to Fleetwood. A new depot and works facility has to first be built. Despite being "pro tram" I would concede the comment by "Willieck" is somewhat true AT PRESENT. The route has new buses, they look smart and very frequent, and in particular are NOT covered in horrendous adverts ALL OVER THE WINDOWS.I think he/she will find things will be even better when the tramway upgrade finally gets finished assuming they have enough trams in service!

Remember that the number one service has been in chaos since the start. They're only quick because they are invariably late. That's in the middle of winter with the town empty. Forget roadworks/Riverdance, they were a red herring thrown in to excuse a badly planned service. Just wait until the town is busy and all the 'free' passes are heading for Cleveleys and Fleetwood. Oh or when it's cancelled during the illuminations. Or when the parades are on in town. Or...oh fill in the rest of the things that jam the area up in summer.

will be nice to see the trams running again, but i have to concede i use the buses far more often, as usually in summer there is a huge queue waiting for the trams.

Won't the tram system be more crowded now that free passes are available for the elderly? I believe they can use them free of charge after 9-30?

Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre pensioners can use them on the tram and thats all. Bit of generosity from the council. Officially the 'free' travel is for offpeak BUS services.

As I live in Larkholme it is very convenient to catch the Number One on Broadway but it is bit of a hike to the nearest Tram Stop.

It is true that the 'buses have not always run to time,(do any of them?)nevertheless I have never had to wait that long. I would hardly describe the service as chaotic once it had settled down. The main problem was lack of proper publicity at the beginning

I do agree with the other person they need to extend the tracks to the airport this will be a good service and bringe more revenue in instead of adead end stop.
