BLACKPOOL'S broadband connection is set to become one of the best in the country.
Communications giant Virgin is launching its 50 megabits service in the resort, which will allow surfers to download nine times faster than the average UK top speed.

According to Government figures, almost three quarters of people in Blackpool hav
e a computer and 88 per cent of broadband users in the resort log on to the internet everyday.

But until now they have only been able to get broadband speeds of between 8Mbs and 20Mbs.

This new service will allow users to download music albums and full TV programmes in just three minutes.

And business leaders in the town say it will be a massive boost, too.

Steve Pye, chairman of the Blackpool-based Federation of Small Businesses, said: "My connection at the moment is 8Mb and sometimes it can be a little slow and even crash.

"When you are part way through putting a deal together this is not a good thing."

Virgin is the first internet provider in the UK to offer the 50Mbs connection, which it is rolling out across the country – with Blackpool one of the first places to gain the speeds.

The Government has also promised that every home in the UK will have access to broadband by 2017.

In Blackpool, a new £150,000 wireless zone has been created in the town centre.

The Wi-Fi Blackpool project has created hot spots at more than a dozen sites, including the Winter Gardens, Church Street, Victoria Street, Birley Street, Corporation Street and the areas around the North
Station and Central Car Park.

It means visitors and residents coming into the town centre with a wireless laptop or phone can access selected sites – including Visit Blackpool, Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Live – for free.

A council spokesman said: "By creating Wi-Fi zones in key public spaces we can start to develop the sort of café culture that is integral to a high-quality town or city centre."

50mb sounds excellent but at £50 a month how many residents will be taking up the offer

Not any will take up this offer due to the price or due to the fact vast swathes of Blackpool don't have a cable connection

Or are the Council going let Virgin dig up every road and pavement to lay new cables?

Mmm. I wonder just how quickly one would exceed the bandwidth limit with such a high speed connection... :0

Virgin has unlimited bandwidth usage within the AUP.

Shame most of the town south of Trafalgar Road cannot access it.

Will the oncoming tax on my phone line help pay for it? I doubt it.

Whoopie, as has been said only parts of Blackpool are cabled. IIRC, when Virgin Media became the new name for Telewest/NTL, their plans were to make Virgin BB available to all. However, they also said they had no plans for laying any new cable, and new services would be via ADSL.

This is another none story, just a speed increase for cabled areas. Also remember they have introduced 'throttling' if you down load more than xgb between peak times.

Virgin has unlimited bandwidth usage within the AUP.**

IF unlimited is 'unlimited' why the need for 'adverse use' in their AUP?

Good news for those with lots of money to waste on having the "fastest".

For normal web browsing and average iTunes use, you don't need it.

For heavy downloading, there are much better and significantly cheaper products around.

Virgin impose throttling on their connections so you only get around 30 minutes of full speed data. That 50 megabit "unlimited" connection you bought is only unlimited for a short time. After that, they reduce your bandwidth by 75%. This is clearly documented on their site and isn't a conspiracy theory.

Don't be misled by their propaganda, broadband that doesn't directly throttle is faster than Virgin over an hour or so, and costs you 5 or 6 times less. A good example is that offered by Rupert Murdoch's satellite company.

Virgin also do not support net neutrality and have proposed to start blocking sites that they don't want you to look at.

id jus like to point out a few things,
1. the speed that virgin offer is based on the local area, eg the lines can take 50mb but its shared among so many houses so ur not likely to ever see that speed.
2. the chairman of the FSB says his connection drops on 8mb, thats one of 2 things, either the line is unstable at that speed in which case the isp should adjust the noise margin on the line to one that is stable, or the router is crashing which would be nothin to do with the line speeds.

i, for one, am lucky enough to live close to my exchange to be able to receive 18Mb down speed, and 2.3Mb upload speed, with an unlimited plan for £21.50 p/m now for me thats fast enough, as i play alot of online games. ppl that i know that have virgin have trouble with connection issues in the evenings as soo many others are usin the connection.
if ur queryin ur noise margin an line attenuation these are the stats for mine :-

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 18167 kbps 2394 kbps
Line Attenuation 23.0 db 10.2 db
Noise Margin 6.0 db 5.6 db

if u want a faster speed by ur isp the u need a low line attenuation, and a noise margin of around 9db.
each isp has their own methods so its best speaking to technical support for the best combination
