THE Government has agreed to funding for the long-awaited £85m upgrade of the resort's famous tram system, The Gazette can reveal.
An announcement today comes after years of campaigning for investment in the network – which was in danger of being closed without millions spent on it.

The decision means the whole length of the track will be upgraded from Fleetwood to Squires Gate and 16 state-of-the-art trams will replace the existing out-of-date fleet.

Council leaders today described it as a "landmark" moment and the investment "crucial" to the resort's ongoing regeneration.

Repairs

The Government will contribute £60.3m to the overall £85.3m cost, with Blackpool Council and Lancashire County Council putting in around £12.5m each.

The Government cash is on top of £11.8m it gave two years ago to fund emergency repairs.

The best heritage trams will be retained under the scheme, but commuters will benefit from a new fast link service.

Transport Minister Tom Harris was making the announcement during a visit to Blackpool today.

He said: "It's certainly a vote of confidence in Blackpool and recognition that this is important to the economy of Blackpool.

"We support light rail in principle but not at any cost and in Blackpool they have come up with a scheme that is affordable, workable and able to create a tremendous boost."

Mr Harris added: "At more than 120 years old, the Blackpool and Fleetwood tramway is part of the local heritage as well as an important part of the local transport system.

gd news as the trams are just as iconic as the tower. i really hope they keep some of the old trams and use them regularly as from a frequent visitor to blackpool theres nothing like sitting in an old tram getting thrown from side to side :)

HURRAH !!!
It is obvious that Mr Ivan T cannot read. Quote "they are an eyesore". - If you read there is going to to be a new fleet of state of the art trams.

This is not for us now, it is for the future generation long after you have passed on in this world. They have been part of Blackpool for over a Century and if you had your way they would be scrapped. Remind me not to vote for you if you ever become a councilor.

If you don't like Blackpool.............then move !!!

Go Chrissy! Go Chrissy!
Please feel free to read all of the comments I have made regards the lights sell off, regards the Winter Gardens Fears. All on this site.

VOTE FOR ME - I will stand for council, because, even though I wasn't born here, I believe in Blackpool as a regeneration from within. People who believe in Blackpool will inherit a great Blackpool for the future generations, and reap the benefits now as well.

I second your emotion.
Positive or Push Off.

Good For You - Good For Blackpool

Fantastic news, this Government has actually done something right for a change. It is about time they gave Blackpool some funding instead of favouring London, Manchester, Liverpool and other major cities. Lets just hope more funding is on the way for other regeneration projects. Next plan should be a new conference centre, so if the Govt can find £15bn for London's Crossrail, then why not a few hundred million for a new conference centre for Blackpool. Mr Positive is right; I you have a problem with Blackpool then push off.
