ONE of Blackpool's leading tourist attractions has gone green.
For the Pleasure Beach is now generating its own power after installing six wind turbines in the 42 acre park.

They will be used to generate electricity which will help cut down fuel bills at the attraction and contribute to the running of rides which include Europe's tallest rollercoaster, the Pepsi Max Big One, and the world's largest dark ride – Valhalla.

Pleasure Beach managing director Amanda Thompson said: "It's fantastic to see the new turbines on Ocean Boulevard generating a green source of energy for our 100 rides and attractions.

"This is just one of our commitments to the environment and making Pleasure Beach a greener place."

The six wind turbines have been installed on the roof of the new education academy, located on Ocean Boulevard, overlooking the Promenade where they can harness the maximum amount of wind power.

Each of the turbines has a 66-inch diameter and they have been designed to fit in with the character of the park.

They are expected to generate 10,000 kilowatts of electricity per year – enough to run three households.

Energy will be fed into the Pleasure Beach electrical system. However, they are not the first turbines to appear on the seafront in South Shore.

Blackpool Council is already harnessing wind power at the Solaris and on the seafront.

no doubt we used 2 wander round with our godsons a lot watching the big one and other rides but it would now cost £35 for us all so htere wont be much chance of us going back. Its not as if there is no where else to go.

Going Green.. Donk fink so,,, Yes this would help, ? but REALLY how much power is totally WASTED on the pleasure beach,, and the council are also to blame, I Know they are a famous illumination attraction, but is this and the endless fireworks going to balance out ?? NO... So why bother, Blackpools carbon footprint must be OUTRAGOUS compared with other resorts that dont need the gimmicks, Blackpool council TRY HARDER !! its not rocket science?

I’m always wary of people that use the phrase ‘it’s not rocket science’. It usually shows a massive lack of understanding and a simplification of the subject being discussed.

Having said that this does appear to be little more than a gimmick. I would be interested to know what percentage of the Pleasure Beach’s power is supplied by renewable sources.

There is no need for the electricity to be generated on site, it can be bought from companies dealing in renewable energy. This would be more effective in reducing carbon omissions but would cost more and would not be visible from the prom or make it in to the press.

Blackpool pleasure beach and blackpool council, the amusment arcades, are all using more electrcity than needed , they dont need a million bulbs to light the prom. the arcades are quite visible that they are an arcade without the amount of flashing mayhem they have displayed outside, SO YES it DOES NOT need a rocket science to know that there is far too much waste in the town electricity wise, and the council should be setting the example, not kids at school turning lights off in the toilets etc, Im sure if the people of blackpool and surrounding areas were given the question, do you want the lights lite this year OR have your bins emptied eveyweek as before, GOING GREEN its just contridiction after the fact, Scrimp here and waste their and profess to be green, SO HOLDEN 6 wind generaters dont fool me and thats why its not rocket science, 6 into over a million bulbs dont cut the mustard, or cant you calculate that yourself. also did you know there is only ONE surviving electricity supplier in england now, what happend to british bought british pride,

I just want to add , that im no kill joy, or go green fanatic, but i do understand i layman terms that, the councils forced green policy of sending different trucks and workers collecting our rubbish on different intervals once a fornight cannot be cost effective, looks GREENER but is it?? also being on the coast there would be several ways of creating free power to produce a source of electricity to provide the lights, wind, wave, and solar could all contribute, but would you sooner have the prom lite up or help a pensioner or someone on a low income have cheaper electric , instead of struggling on a pre paid card meter afraid of heating the water, having the fire on etc, Build a power source and generate the electric and boast its green ? this is the future, oh sorry didnt use rocket science, just common sense, why cant the council/goverment see that too. ITS A WASTE, CORRUPT, DISGRACE, and we pay for it??
