EFFORTS to reconnect Blackpool to London by air are gathering pace.
Swedish company Wings of Europe has visited the Fylde with a plan to get a new flight from the resort to Stansted off the ground.

Blackpool lost its connection in 2007 when Ryanair axed its Stansted service.

Wings of Europe is a specialist in developing regional routes with support from local communities and persuading investors to invest with it in the service.

Wings, which has also developed services in Denmark says it has a tried and tested formula, which has worked eight times before.

Managing director of the company, Daniel Langsten, spent the day speaking to business chiefs to discuss how the local business community on the Fylde coast can invest in and develop its own low fare airline to restore a direct link to London.

Mr Langsten said: "Lancashire has many similarities with the regions where we have previously assisted in the establishment of local airlines.

"It is time-consuming and expensive to get to the capital."

An excellent idea to organize a group of local business people in order to invest in something. I would like us to do something similar to create an Open Access Rail company to return direct rail links to London. I would invest in it.

What is the point? You can be in Central London from Preston in a little over two hours these days, why would you get to the airport a good hour before your flight, hang around in departures, load up for a 40 minute flight then spend half an hour waiting around Stansted before taking the 45 minute train to out-of-the-way Liverpool Street? It doesn't save you any time, costs a fortune (even if the flight seems 'cheap') and wrecks the environment. Let's get Blackpool Airport closed and bulldozed in time to build something good for Blackpool as this reccession ends.

Reinstating flights to London - Good idea. Re-instating flights to Stanstead - Not a good idea. Flights must be to London City. Stanstead is NOT London, it's Cambridge. If London City, i'd use the service, Stanstead, i'll continue to use the train.

The last Blackpool to London flight was very popular, however as Zim states the train is now actually 3 hours from home to Euston ( incl taxis from home and train to preston) for most of the fylde coast. A flight to stansted may just have an advantage but this is really only going to come into opplay if you wish to interconnect at Stansted to another flight. Personally I would far rather pay a little ( ok a lot !) more for a flight that took me straight to City Airport. Then I get real convenience and time savings. Perhaps 2 hours home to Canary Wharf instead of the current 3.5+ incl Underground connections. And ofcourse City Airport is Clean and not full of Stansted bogans

osato, are you a complete and utter muppet? why don't you just napalm everything in that area and solve all the fylde problems, the airport brings a lot of money to the area fool

The day of the airlines advantage is over , you can leave Euston at 16.30 & be in Blackpool North for 19.10. At other times of the day 2h50m is the average . Only problem for rail is the cost of turn up & go. Granted the pendolinio trains are derisory & the bits of junk that run between Preson & Blackpool are in dire need of the scrapyard , but its gets you there. Through trains are whats realy needed , but until somebody in whitehall can be convinced to put their hands in their pockets to fund electrifictaion & modernisation then the through trains will never return

The use of Stansted is problematic , okay if you need that side of London / East Anglia. To me going to Gatwick is the most feasable. Maybe money from private sector involvement should be put into a open access rail operator, but Bransons Virgin would object due to the lack of train paths & god forbid competition.

Aer Arann ( the lot that do the Dublin flight) already do an Isle of Man - London City service - surely adding a stop at Blackpool to this would sort the problem to everyone's benefit

I go to London pretty much every week and mostly the trains to and from Euston are great, if a little pricey, flights may be good but only if to the right airport (London City) at the right times an regularity and at a good price. Somehow I cannot see this happening. The train is much easier and better for the environment.

So PD37, Stansted is in Cambridge? Last time I went, it was in Essex. When did they move it? Would've been nice of them to inform us. Thanks for the tip-off
