Bid to revive historic Blackpool area

AMBITIOUS plans to upgrade Blackpool's most historic tourist area have been unveiled.
Residents are to be asked for their views on seven options for the future of the Foxhall district which has been offering holiday accommodation since the late 1800s.

Possibilities range from creating a Victorian-themed resort to turning the neighbourhood over to residential use or even a student village.

The proposals are the latest in a series of ideas, dating back to the resort's original 2003 masterplan, designed to boost the area.

Foxhall is also key to Blackpool's bid for World Heritage Site status – based on its claim to have been the first mass market holiday destination.

Whichever option is favoured, they all include plans to create a new pedestrian-friendly plaza at Foxhall Square.

Dale Street could also be pedestrianised.

Neil Winkley, chairman of the Foxhall Village Regeneration Association, who also runs the Aberford Hotel on Yorkshire Street, said: "It is a long term process and people have to understand that there is no quick fix. These proposals involve every aspect of the area.

"They go from making it a complete Victoriana theme park to bulldozing the whole area. In reality it will be a mix and match."

Nick Osborne, of the Greenmount Hotel on Bairstow Street, said: "Anything that regenerates the area is good, as long as they realise some of us are still trading here."

Sue Barraclough, of the New Milton Hotel, also on Bairstow Street, added: "Things are already changing but any new ideas for regeneration will be welcome."

Coun Maxine Callow, Blackpool Council's cabinet member for regeneration, said: "The area is crying out for improvements but it is very important we have the input of all the people who live and work there."

It is hoped cash could come from the Northwest Development Agency, ReBlackpool and heritage grants.

The report will go before the council's executive on Wednesday.

Mr Positive,

...dating back to the resort's original 2003 masterplan

So, why does it need discussing again? I walk through Fox Hall every day, and I mean EVERY DAY. All I see is some rag traders (not that this is a skill shortage anywhere in Blackpool) Some Fancy Goods traders; again, not good value, not quality. A bar you wouldn't take your worst enemy in, and some hotels. Its the hotels that are trading as guest house accomodation I pity. Because of the dreadful low-life atmosphere there. The B&B "spend-me-giro-on-crack" littering the streets.

I am so pleased it is purely as a short cut I come through there. It makes me appreciate my own life and neighbourhood so much more.

Were the police not looking for new headquarters? Well - if you want to go into business - set up where your customers are, Chief Constable.

BILL BLACKETT,

We bought our first guest house in Shannon Street in 1985 this so called idea of turning the Foxhall area into a Victorian themed area was discissed in 1987/88
and nothing was done then and still hasn't been done since so after 23 years do you still think it will happen. The money was supposed to come from some european fund or other but as usual in Blackpool all projects have many discussions but nothing ever comes of them its no wonder the town is in decline. The so called holiday area is shrinking so fast there will be no holiday in 10 years time.
All we have to look forward to is wading through cigarette ends and litter while walking through the streets and trying to avoid the drunken louts that are on most corners of the city centre its strange we can see them but the police can't so much for the no drinking in the street

Been coming to Blackpool every year for the past 23 yrs. Foxhall was a dump then and now its the pits. It should have been bulldozed years ago.Stop talking and get on with it.Blackpool will never claim top holiday spot while dogholes like this are allowed to exist.

It really is a dump, the buildings should be flattened and more up to date accommodation built.

Who wants to stay in a grotty bedsit, it has no historic value, bring in the buldozer

I worked every school holiday in Foxhall Road in the fifties and it was teaming with activity from early morning till pub closing time . It has sadly gone downhill but could be revived with a bold and forward looking plan to make the whole area user friendly . Yes, it would mean forced purchase of a lot of decaying property and naturally compensation for the owners but the area is golden if re-constructed
with a user-friendly approach and subsequent management of the street furniture and facilities .
It could look like Lytham , with lots of independent traders, boutiques, bistrots, bijou hotels and seating areas . Money is being thrown into the resort but so far none seems to have touched the Foxhall area.

bulldozing it sounds great! The hotels there which are owned by responsible hoteliers would soon be able to relocate, those who have been fooled into buying a hotel which turned out to be a white elephant willbe able to breathe a sigh of relief and the hovels currently housing junkies and claimants can claim their compulsory purhcase package of £30 and go and leech elsehwhere. Bulldozers is the way to go!
