FLIGHTS into Blackpool Airport were forced to be diverted away from the Fylde coast due to staff sickness.
Two members of staff from the air traffic control tower called in sick on Sunday meaning the inbound Jet2 flight from Palma had to land in Manchester.

Pilots of other smaller pleasure and business craft were told of the news as they approached Blackpool.

Any service trying to land after 7.30pm was advised to make alternative arrangements.

Bosses at the Squires Gate terminal said three staff usually man the tower, but as two called in sick there was insufficient coverage to man the shifts on the rota.

They have apologised to passengers who were due to land at the airport and anyone aff-ected.

In a statement, the airport put the reason for its closure down to "highly unusual circumstances".

A spokeswoman for Blackpool International said: "Two air traffic controllers advised the airport that they were ill on Sunday.

"Given these highly unusual circumstances a decision was taken at approximately 7.30pm to redirect the last two incoming scheduled flights to Manchester Airport and restrict general aviation.

"It is a very rare occurrence that aircraft are diverted to another airport because of staff illness.

"However, in order to meet legal safety requirements three air traffic controllers are required to be on duty as passenger safety is paramount. The airport could not deploy replacement personnel bec-ause of strict aviation regulations relating to working hours.

"The air traffic staffing rota was reorganised and the airport quickly resumed normal operations yesterday morning.

"The airport would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers."

Perhaps a consequence of the sunny weather over the weekend.

Not a very good advertisement for what is supposed to be a huge North West brand is it?

Who do you blame the controllers for pulling a sickie or the airports management for not having sufficient resources to meet demand?

How amatuerish!

I have been on here giving positive comments about the airport in the past, but this is indefensible.

Not to have an ATC officer on standby for such an occurrence shows complete ineptitude. The cost of diverting, extra aircraft handling fees, emergency transport costs (a coach company would have been able to name it's price on a Sunday night, not to mention the inconvenience to the passengers!

Diversions are only acceptable in the event of bad weather or aircraft having technical problems.

Blackpool Airport Management - Hang your heads in shame!

(as should the journo who wrote the headline! lol)

It is very unfortunate that Blackpool Airport has been in decline since Ryanair pulled out and I can see no way of things returning.I personally have property in Spain and used the Airport on a regular basis but now have to travel to Manchester.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember the management there saying there were more international flights to come,Yer right.

I and several of my friends were on this flight from Torremolinos.
Jet2 apologised (not their fault) but issued a letter for all passengers, and i must say almost everyone accepted it as s**t happens but we all admitted that Blackpool International was a joke.
The coaches were laid on and we got back to blackpool at 01.00am and i must say Jet2 and Manchester staff were sound.
So the contingency plan if 2 staff are sick at the tower is to divert planes to Manchester... i think BIA have to rethink their policy on this. Proper back-up has to be met, you would'nt find this happening elsewhere.

I have been employed in aviation/aerospace for 40 years. I have always had links to the Fylde, but haven't always lived here. I have worked at most major airports in the UK, Europe and Melbourne, Aus.

I have attended 2 interviews for employment at Blackpool airport. At both I was amazed at the casual attitude of the interviewers. (Both Airlines unsurprisingly went bust) The impression given by them, was as you would expect from an airline operating from the outback in Australia! Third world airlines operate more professionally.

Blackpool Airport, Balfour Beatty and Blackpool Council need to get together and plan to drag the airport from the 1970's into the 21st Century!

If the infrastructure was improved, airlines would be drawn to Blackpool to save on landing/handling fees at Manchester and the passengers would rather come here from all parts of Lancashire, than travel to Manchester or Liverpool!

another nail in the coffin of blackpool airport.
companies as jet2 wont stand for the extra costs, and having customers upset. sad, can blackpool airport be dragged into the 21st century ?? or is it just a dream ??

Not only was the Palma flight diverted but also the Malaga flight which my wife was on.
I tried to ring our "International Airport" to find out what was happening but guess what? There was no answer! I rang at least a dozen times but no one there.
We may as well make the most of the airport because it wont be there much longer !!

We have tried to make the most of it, because we believe in supporting local facilities and it is good to save on the cost going to Manchester or Liverpool. But this is what you get — the fancy 'International Airport' title on the signs at the end of the M55, £10 each to travel and yet very little in terms of service options. The ultimate in style (or not!) over substance.
