LYTHAM traders are waiting to hear whether car parking charges will be scrapped after Fylde accountants advised they should remain in place.
Business owners have demanded council bosses act, saying the combination of high parking charges, "overzealous" traffic wardens and the opening of Booths supermarket are killing trade.

Now, in a report, council accountants have advised that because of the funding shortfall caused by the new concessionary bus travel the charges remain.

Fylde Council leader John Coombes said: "The final decision on the car parking charges will be made at a meeting on Monday but we are still in consultation with traders."

Traders said they were disappointed. Sara Lanigan, from Lanigan's fishmongers on Clifton Street, said: "I feel in a way that we have been given false hope by the council that these charges will be reduced or dropped."

It was reported early this year that Blackpool Council was to reduce parking charges, and 3 months later a 24 hour ticket increased from £10 to £12 !!!

Why do people keep going on about Booths supermarket free parking having an adverse effect on Lytham trade? It is the opposite. Since it was made public this was a free car park it is pretty full most of the time - the owners of these cars are definitely not all inside the store - I've seen them going into and returning from Lytham.

I personally won't pay to park/shop anywhere!
There are plenty of free out of town shopping malls around so why pay!
The last time I shopped in town was 2001 and I know i'm not alone with my views.

You'd rather spend the money on petrol travelling out of town than paying £1 to shop locally?

Yes kumquat I agree - previously I used to drive to Marton - now I use Lytham and walk from the Booths carpark into town if I want anything. That has to increase trade and the supermarket certainly has increased employment opportunities locally. Town centre shops can't compete with supermarkets on food shopping - they have to be different and specialist if they are to survive (though Tesco obviously sees an opportunity).

The old Booths shop seems to be as busy as ever.
Is this why it is still open?
The new shop always seems empty,,,,,, but the car park is usually well filled,,,,,
If all parking were free and well advertised would visiters flock in? Bet your life they would.

The red herring about funding fre buses is a joke.
Why not simply not pay the bus companies for months on end, and let them shout at "Gordon from Jockistan"

Fylde BC is apparently led by an alleged business man.
So why don't they employ common business practices.
