A FYLDE coast father today said he was living in fear after he was wrongly accused of being James Bulger's killer Jon Venables.
David Calvert has become the victim of an internet campaign which claims he is the infamous child killer.

The Fleetwood dad-of-four has been named in messages sent to mobile phones across the country in the last few days.

A group on social networking website Facebook – calling on people to kill Mr Calvert – had attracted 2,500 "fans" before it was taken down by administrators.

This is the second time in five years the 27-year-old has been falsely accused of being Venables.

In 2005, Mr Calvert approached The Gazette to reveal how he was terrified he would be attacked.

Mr Calvert said: "People have been turning up at my neighbours' houses with pictures of the killers printed off the internet and saying one of them is me.

"Now I hear threats are being made and I'm worried that someone will come for me or my girlfriend or hurt my kids."

He says he and his family have now gone into hiding.

The problems arose when Liverpool-born Mr Calvert moved to Fleetwood in 2003 and admitted to neighbours he had served time.

He had been sentenced to four months for fraud, but locals mistook his honesty for a revelation he was living a secret life.

Venables and accomplice Robert Thompson were given new identities when they were freed from custody in 2001.

Venables is now back behind bars after a "serious" breach of the terms of his release licence.

According to reports, 27-year-old Venables, who was 10 when he and Thompson carried out the brutal killing, is being investigated over allegations of child pornography.

This is just another cost of the emotional mob rule mentality developing amongst the lesser educated.

The legal process must be allowed to progress unhindered.

If they hadn't protected the identity of those monsters in the first place then none of this would be happening....

It is a shame that there are such small minded people starting vicious rumours like this...

Absolutely disgusting, this family is subjected to harassment because of narrow minded individual's! Let's hope the instigators of this atrocity are located.

These vigilante thugs won't even bother to find out what the truth is before the start causing trouble for innocent people.

You wonder why the Government won't tell people if anyone with convictions is moving into their area ?

You have your answer plain and simple.

I have to agree with Difi (posting #2)

And it really is shameful that such rubbish takes place.

Just sums this country up, the Innocent are hounded and abused (not that he's inocent but fruad is a different type of crime) and the Guilty get sent to holiday cramp with Wii, Plasma TV's and free lodging and then get out with new ID and we have to carry on paying for that as well. Hopefully the person thats done this will realise their mistake and correct it, but I don't hold out any hope.

Poor man - to be accused of being such a monster. Maybe he should visit Mr Straw to prove why the real identity should be revealed. I'm sure there are 27 year old men up and down the country who are facing similar situations, having an unfortunate resemblance and a Liverpudlian accent. I would certainly like to know if Jon Venables was living on my street - not to hound or harrass him, but to ensure my children stayed well away from him and so I could do what any parent would and keep them safe.

If the gov/police and do gooders in this country didn't hide these perv's this poor lad wouldn't be looking over his shoulder. What about some poor girl who could marry one these monsters not knowing any thing about the past what they did. Weve paid enought out to hide this bas..., surley that is enough his had one chance and he blew it, now let the world know who and where he is. He shouldn't be alive any other country he'd have been hung, shot, stoned or worse still. I'm sure that out there the police/prisons/gov and any other authority that have to deal with this b..... would agree a life for a life. Weve spent enough of tax payers money on him and the other one.

Two sides - a look at both,

Let the law of the land run it's course, surely most right thinking people can see the reasons why Jack Straw can't disclose information that would jeopardise the future Court case...against Venables.

If we continue to allow the press to try an run the country we will find ourselves in a bigger mess that we already are, all it needs is for some unthinking dope to add something to an online website, which the press get hold of!... adjust it a bit or in some cases quite a lot !!.. and what happens Venables is judged to have not had a fair trial and gets off..!

I have to say my heart says one thing my head says something else in this particular case...I feel sure that if he Venables - whatever happens from now on !... will have a very much shortened life span - in or out of prison.

What comes round goes round ! hhhmmmm.
