A NEW £150,000 coach park is just weeks away from opening in Blackpool.
Work is already under way on the scheme after planning permission was granted for changes, including landscaping and a new access road at the junction of Central Drive and New Bonny Street.

The council revealed in May that it proposed to convert 8
0 car parking spaces on the Central Car Park into six bus bays in order to make the centre of the resort more accessible for visitors arriving by coach.

John Donnellon, assistant director for built environment at Blackpool Council, said: "We want the coach park up and running in time for the start of the school holidays.

"We are optimistic about this season.

"Our early figures for this year suggest it is going to be a good year.

"We believe more people are going to holiday in this country and anything to make the coach experience better for visitors arriving that way must be a good idea."

Further work to create shelters for passengers will be done later in the year following the Illuminations switch-on, which will be held for the last time on Central Car Park this year.

It is scheduled to move to the Tower Festival Headland in 2010.

Work is also under way to replace the toilets on the car park with a modern block of Danfo cubicles, in line with the public toilets provided in other parts of the resort.

Landscaping is being improved in order to make the car and coach park a more attractive arrival experience.

The move to create a dedicated coach park in the town centre has been welcomed by hoteliers and coach tour operators.

Peter Taylor, secretary of StayBlackpool, has described it as "long overdue" while the Coach Tourism Council said Blackpool was one of its most popular destinations so the new parking would "definitely be well used".

Excellent news, now my girlfriend often arrives by National Express Coach at Talbot Road bus station, is there anyway we could move the National Express site here until the Talbot Gateway is completed because the Talbot road site at the moment is awful, we have seen druggies and drunks there and it's a giant concrete hell.

80 car parking spaces on the Central Car Park into six bus bays..... £150 grand.

Are they using gold paint for the Yellow lines, is the road surface solid marble? I must be very out of touch, or somebody else is.

Am on a pitch in the Lakes with the caravan.Next to us is a campervan that cost more than 150,000.

So yes 6 coach bays at that price is a bargain.

Total waste of money, especially as we already have one opposite the football ground!

#4, Look at the state of that one at Lonsdale Road though. All the windows were smashed within weeks of them building it and were never replaced. It's dirty, run down, and thoroughly unpleasant.

That whole area has been systematically killed off by the constant road and car park closures during the season for the last decade. #1, National Express used to drop off at Lonsdale, but pulled out 4 or 5 years back for whatever reason.

Agree with the comments about 6 parking bays costing £150k as well. It does seem a hideous amount for so little return: the Council must be bleeding money at the moment.

#3, Not really sure what the existence of an expensive camper van has to do with some simple line painting. Its like saying I've got a £300k Rolls-Royce therefore your £150k house is a bargain. A bargain to someone with tons and tons of money and no sense, perhaps. I guess the Council fits the bill there!

I agree Philtheone, Lonsdale Coach station and Central Coach park are absolute eyesores and they are miles away from the town centre, although they are convenient for hotels around South Shore/Foxhall. I have been saying for ages though why does Central Corridor stop at Lonsdale Road why can't they continue it right through to Central Station along Spine Road? With the same sort of work done on Phase 1 and 2 it could look a lot better and a much more pleasant welcome to Blackpool.

Those are questions you'll probably never get answers to!

I'll bet the car parking spaces that are to be changed will be the few that are for disabled drivers. Just another way of getting disabled people out of blackpool.

Disabled parking spaces are abundant in Blackpool. Use you blue badge and you can park where you like - even when you cause a danger to everybody else.
