THE dreaded smell has returned to haunt Fleetwood, say disgruntled residents.
And they are demanding to know what is going to be done about it after local council tax payers helped pay for a £40,000 smells investigation last year.
The smells probe by Entec UK Ltd concluded that the town's unpopular sewage plant was to blam
e for the stench.
United Utilities, which runs the plant, announced that £50m would be spent on the site and that the improvements would remove the problem.
But angry residents say it returned at the weekend and on Bank Holiday Monday.
Resident Wendy Wood said: "Even after closing all the windows the smell lingers and sleep becomes impossible. I find it very stressful indeed.
"Even more stressful is the fact that Wyre Council have spent a fortune to determine where the smell comes from but seem to have done nothing to tackle United Utilities."
Fleetwood councillor Margaret Birkett also noticed the smell and said a delegation of councillors was needed to visit the plant as soon as possible.
And Coun Mark Hamer said: "This is a public nuisance and we need to be told what steps will be taken to stop it once and for all."
Suggestions that compensation claims be looked into have been discussed both by Coun Hamer and by the Action For Fleetwood Group.
A spokesman for Wyre Council confirmed that there had been a big increase in calls to their smell hotline.
United Utilities were also looking into the complaints.
