THE organiser of Fleetwood Tram Sunday has slammed the "apathy" which may wipe out the historic transport festival.
Keith Yates, chairman of Fleetwood Transport Festival, spoke out after just ONE new volunteer turned up at a recruitment drive at the North Euston Hotel.
Admitting he was "very disappointed", he is now asking local people to consider if they actua
lly want Tram Sunday to continue.
The festival, pencilled in for July 20, is still the biggest such event in the North, attracting huge crowds of people to the town with its displays of vintage trams and buses.
But organising and marshalling the event is a major headache and the organising committee is very small. Last year, only an eleventh hour recruitment drive saved the event.
Mr Yates said: "I sense some apathy from local people and maybe they feel the event is played out, or perhaps they just think there will always be someone there to run it. The reality is that without a few more volunteers giving a little of their time, the festival's long-term future may be numbered.
"That would be a shame, because next year is our 25th anniversary."
He is urging more people to devote just half an hour a week to coming up with new ideas and getting involved in the festival.
