THE proposed River Wyre tidal barrage scheme would be one of the most ambitious schemes in the history of Fleetwood.
FREE 2008 argue that it would be a good thing for the following reasons:
* It would help to regenerate the town because the lagoon aspect of the development would attract tourists and new businesses.
* The scheme would additionally help Fleetwood because the road over or under the River Wyre, which would be created by the barrage across the river, would improve road links between Fleetwood and Lancaster.
* The new road would also ease congestion of the A585.
* By controlling the tide and building new flood defences around the barrage, Fleetwood and the local area would be protected from the risk of flooding caused by rising tides.
* The turbine system within the barrage would create enough energy to power thousands of homes and businesses – and it would be sustainable 'green' energy. The scheme would also have a longer life than windfarm projects.
Reservations have been raised:
* Some simply consider the costs too prohibitive.
* Questions have been raised about whether the scheme could actually cause flooding.
* Environmentalists say some sites of special scientific interest along the banks of the Wyre would be lost. Lancashire County Council rejected similar barrage proposals on environmental grounds in 1991.
