Today the Fylde coast will fall silent to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Below is a list of 913 names, featured on Blackpool’s war memorial, of soldiers who died during the First World War.

100 years on: How Blackpool marked the end of the First World War

It gives us some idea of the scale of that sacrifice – but of course the conflict’s death toll across the Fylde coast is even higher.

And, in truth, its full extent may never be known.

The total number of people from the Fylde coast who laid down their lives between 1914 and 1918 is difficult to calculate.

Names are scattered across multiple monuments, bringing the total across the Blackpool area to more than 1,000.

Across Lancashire, according to the Imperial War Museum’s database, the number of names on monuments is close to 25,000 – for the First World War alone.

But some casualties were never identified – like the unknown soldier from the Lancashire Fusiliers buried near Ypres, Belgium, last week – while others may be honoured on memorials elsewhere.

But regardless, it is clear from the names we do have that the Fylde coast, like many areas, paid a high price for this war.

But thanks to these memorials – and the painstaking work to trace those who lost their lives – that sacrifice will not be forgotten.
